On 27th November 2021, We Are Weymouth (BID) delivered a day of festive cheer to mark the start of the Christmas season here in Weymouth.  With elf workshops in businesses across the town: elf face-painting and make-up, gingerbread decorating and elf hat making, there was lots to entertain the children. Alongside this, The Palm house held an elf hunt and Cineworld screened a one-off viewing of Elf the movie whilst street performers were seen throughout the town.  Finally, the day culminated with a gathering of hundreds of elves in New Bond Street, around the Christmas tree for the Town council’s light’s switch on led by Cllr Colin Huckle, Mayor of Weymouth.

Cllr Huckle was joined in Santa’s sleigh by Deputy Mayor Cllr Ann Weaving, Dawn Rondeau COO of We Are Weymouth and a very special guest, Josie Gibson from ITV’s This Morning.  Josie and a film crew were escorted throughout the town by the We Are Weymouth team, all for a feature on Weymouth’s Elf World Record Attempt!

This year, locals, visitors, and businesses across Weymouth came together to embrace the Elf World Record Attempt – dressing up all and everything to get into the Christmas spirit.  The numbers of elves are still being counted from sign up forms, and social media s’elfies – but We Are Weymouth plans to make this an annual event, inviting Guinness World Record to adjudicate in 2022.

Dawn Rondeau, We Are Weymouth (BID) Chief Operations Officer comments: “We were thrilled with the number of people who attended the event on Saturday in New Bond Street. It was a huge risk, which paid off. We’ve had amazing feedback from visitors, some of whom came hundreds of miles in their elf outfits, plus positive feedback from many local businesses who saw an increase in the numbers of people shopping in the town throughout the day. Seeing the community come together to dress as elves was fantastic and we look forward to bringing Guinness World Records to Weymouth next year. The lights provided by Weymouth town council look beautiful and Weymouth is now officially ready for Christmas and the calendar of events planned throughout December.”
