We Are Weymouth is proud to unveil two exciting placemaking initiatives that celebrate the town’s rich history and vibrant community spirit. Flags and signage are being installed across the Great George Street/Westham Road area and Lodmoor Hill, marking a new chapter in Weymouth’s cultural and commercial identity.

Honouring Georgian Heritage

In tribute to King George III and the area’s Georgian legacy, flags and flagpoles have been installed throughout Great George Street and adjacent roads. This initiative, developed in collaboration with local businesses and stakeholders since spring, commemorates the historical significance of the area – once the residential gardens of the monarch himself.  A Weymouth ‘claim to fame’ is that in 1801 when King George III created the Union Flag to celebrate the United Kingdom, it was flown in Weymouth on his first visit here after its creation and has been proudly flown here ever since.

Two flags will be displayed: the Union Flag and a specially designed banner featuring King George III’s royal cypher. These visual markers aim to foster local pride and attract visitors by telling the story of Weymouth’s regal past.

“We’ve been working closely with businesses in this part of town since spring, and it’s been wonderful to see the enthusiasm for celebrating our Georgian roots, said Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, of We Are Weymouth. “This initiative is about more than decoration – it’s about storytelling, identity, and bringing our community together through shared heritage.”

Heritage stickers for historically significant buildings will follow later in the year, adding another layer to the town’s historical narrative.

Meanwhile, Lodmoor Hill is stepping into the spotlight with a bold new identity. Following a series of collaborative meetings with local business owners, the area has officially embraced its name and character as Lodmoor Hill – a “town within a town” and the welcoming gateway for visitors arriving in Weymouth.

Brightly coloured flags featuring the new Lodmoor Hill logo will be installed across the area by the end of September, with each participating business proudly flying the banner.

“Lodmoor Hill is more than just a location – it’s a community with heart, history, and a unique identity,” said Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, We Are Weymouth BID Manager.  This initiative is about celebrating that spirit and putting Lodmoor Hill firmly on the map as Weymouth’s vibrant gateway. We’re thrilled to see local businesses come together to make this vision a reality.”

Future plans include:

      • Palm and cordyline trees in pots for Spring 2026

        • A permanent trail with QR codes and interactive elements

          • A “Welcome to Lodmoor Hill” sign and inclusion on the town map

These initiatives reflect We Are Weymouth’s ongoing commitment to placemaking, community engagement, and celebrating the town’s unique identity. Further placemaking groups have been meeting in South Harbourside, St Alban street and St Mary Street with other areas encouraged to participate in 2026.
