The streets of Weymouth came alive this past weekend as thousands gathered for the fourth annual Dusk Till Dark event, a mesmerising display of light, music, and community. Hosted by We Are Weymouth in collaboration with Activate Performing Arts, this free event transformed the town into a vibrant hub of energy, celebrating both local talent and world-class performers.
Kicking off on Friday 27th September, the renowned Worldbeaters captivated crowds with their high-energy performance of “Spark!” in three different locations across town. Drums echoed through the streets as the performers illuminated Weymouth with their signature blend of live music, dynamic drumming, and dazzling light displays.
The highlight of the weekend was the world premiere of “Fireflies” on Saturday 28th September, along Weymouth Esplanade. As students from Weymouth College joined the performance the group of Fireflies swelled from 6 to 22! A surprise for spectators included Fireflies appearing on balconies of the seafront buildings, drumming out into the Bay. This new performance from Worldbeaters was a fusion of rhythmic drumming, community performers, and glowing lights, leaving audiences spellbound and closing the weekend with an unforgettable, immersive sensory experience.
Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth, commented:“This year’s Dusk Till Dark exceeded all expectations. It’s been amazing to witness the streets of Weymouth filled with light, music, and community spirit. The world premiere of ‘Fireflies’ was a standout moment, and we’re proud to have hosted such a magical event.”
Seth Turner-Higgins, Head of Creative Industries, Weymouth College comments: “We have been very excited to have had the opportunity for our students to work with Worldbeaters on the Dusk til Dark project, facilitated by Activate Performing Arts. Students enjoyed 2 days of workshops, culminating with participation in the live event in Weymouth town centre on Saturday evening. Experiences that allow students to engage with industry professionals, when they can learn new skills and broaden their understanding, are invaluable. We are really grateful to have been offered this opportunity.”
Kate Wood, Artistic & Executive Director at Activate Performing Arts comments: “World Beaters did an amazing job appearing across all four locations in Weymouth over the weekend. The student ‘Firefly’ performers from Weymouth College were brilliant. We were thrilled so many people joined us, some travelling to the county especially for the event.”
Chris Maines-Beasley, Director at Worldbeaters, comments: “We were delighted to premiere our new show Fireflies in Weymouth. Our first show, Spark!, has been touring the world for 12 years. We hope Fireflies will have a similar life and that it all started in Weymouth.”
The event has once again demonstrated Weymouth’s vibrant cultural scene, drawing visitors from near and far to experience the town’s unique charm.
