– We Are Weymouth, launches night buses to revitalise town’s night time economy-
We Are Weymouth, the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), is excited to announce the launch of a new late-night bus service pilot, starting in May and running through until 31st December. This initiative is designed to support Weymouth’s vibrant night-time economy, improve safety, and create new employment opportunities across the town.
Following consultations with its levy payers, We Are Weymouth recognised the need for extended public transport to encourage visitors and locals to stay out longer, enjoy the town’s thriving bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues, and boost the local economy. In collaboration with First Bus, We Are Weymouth has secured an extended service, with the last buses now running until 1am. The pilot will begin in May, connecting Portland, Weymouth, and Dorchester, with routes to Littlemoor and Preston launching in July. Subject to further funding, a Chickerell service is also planned.
To make the scheme a reality, We Are Weymouth has worked closely with Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester town councils to secure essential funding. This partnership ensures that visitors and locals alike can enjoy Weymouth’s lively evenings – from seaside cocktails and live music to late-night dining – with the reassurance of a safe, affordable, and greener journey home.
The late-night service not only supports the town’s hospitality businesses but also promotes safer streets by reducing the need for lone walking at night. Offering a reliable alternative to taxis or car journeys, the buses will help cut carbon emissions while improving access to evening jobs and entertainment. It’s another step towards making Weymouth, and its neighbouring towns, even more welcoming after dark.
Dawn Rondeau Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth comments: “We are thrilled to have instigated this project and to have secured funding from Dorchester Town Council, Portland Town Council, and Weymouth Town Council, as well as We Are Weymouth, which is managing the contract with First Bus. We are hopeful to secure additional funding to ensure a full evening service by July. Our message is clear, please use the buses to attend events and have some great evenings out within the town. Let’s work together to ensure the pilot is viable and buses continue into 2026.”
The pilot’s success will be closely monitored, with First Bus deciding on its continuation into 2026 based on the results.
Councillor Charlie Flack, Vice Chair of Portland Town Council said: “The Town Council welcomes the trial of the late-night bus service in support of the local night-time economy, by helping to enhance residents and visitors’ safety whilst providing employment opportunities.”
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell comments: “We are pleased to support this initiative and hope it makes travel to and from work easier for our vital late night workers and also those enjoying a night out in Weymouth. Buses are also better for the environment than many cars.”
