Weymouth Businesses pledge to go greener as part of We Are Weymouth’s new campaign around sustainability
We Are Weymouth, the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) launches its summer campaign focusing on sustainability in the town of Weymouth. Looking at how to improve the town’s carbon footprint, protect the local coastal environment and increase Weymouth’s circular economy – boosting the Business District of the town and securing its future.
We Are Weymouth is asking businesses to pledge to make just one small change. These changes could be anything from – opting to recycle more within the business, volunteering for litter picks, changing transport habits, pledging to try and shop locally once a week or using our local service providers in the town. The pledge is broad, it’s the first step to making Weymouth a greener town and something We Are Weymouth hopes to build on year on year.
Dawn Rondeau, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth (BID) comments: “With nearly 700 BID Levy Payers in Weymouth, and another 5yrs of the BID, we really felt it was important that we look at the town’s impact on the environment, our carbon footprint, and the sustainability of the town’s economy. We’re asking businesses to pledge to do what they can, within their sphere of influence to help Weymouth go greener. We understand that big changes are not viable for all our businesses, but we believe that if all 700 businesses pledged to make one change, the impact would be immense.
This campaign also gives us the opportunity to celebrate all Weymouth has to offer when it comes to green activities and green businesses – buying fish from our local fishermen who fish using sustainable methods, walking along the South West Coastal Path, cycling to the Oasis Cafe, refilling at SW Coast Refills, purchasing second hand books from books Afloat or repairing items at Repair Cafe Weymouth.”

We Are Weymouth (BID) is committed to supporting green initiatives throughout the town, working with Weymouth Town Council, Dorset Council, Litter Free Dorset and Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project.
We Are Weymouth have supported initiatives such as the recycling bins for crabbing lines and nets on the harbour, ensured all craft activities within the town, wherever possible, use recycled materials, instigated the Poppy making project (which recommences this month) utilising plastic bottles for a Remembrance Day art installation, and since 2019 have ensured hanging baskets have been placed in the town. Last year We Are Weymouth changed to hanging baskets designed with a water conserving reservoir to ensure the town not only looks beautiful but additionally preserves water as they do not leak; minimize evaporation and only need to be watered once a week. We Are Weymouth is currently endeavouring to secure grant funding to install a recycling whale in the town, thus protecting our wildlife and our marine life in the sea, beach, and harbour.
Finally, We Are Weymouth works doggedly to encourage both locals and visitors to shop locally thus supporting the town’s business economy, helping to secure Weymouth’s future.
