– Welcome to Weymouth! –
Passengers arriving in Weymouth are now greeted with a striking new mural thanks to a creative collaboration between students at Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College, We Are Weymouth (Weymouth BID) and South Wessex Community Rail Partnership.
Created by Extended Diploma in Creative Practice students, this vibrant artwork was the result of a live group commission set by Weymouth BID. The brief: to design and produce a welcoming, sustainable mural using an innovative material – melted plastic bottle tops transformed into colourful plastic sheets.
The finished piece, now installed at Weymouth Train Station, draws inspiration from the town’s distinctive colours, coastlines, and landmarks. Look closer and you’ll find hidden details – each student added a personal element to the design, celebrating their collaboration, creativity, and connection to Weymouth.
Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth, commented: “This project perfectly encapsulates what We Are Weymouth is about – welcoming visitors, showcasing local creativity, and finding innovative ways to care for our town and environment. The idea came after our poppy installation project at Nothe Fort left us with hundreds of coloured bottle tops which we commissioned the college to use to create a mural for the town. The students have done an incredible job, and this mural is a fantastic addition to the station, offering everyone who arrives here a true sense of place.”

The mural reflects the townscape and spirit of Weymouth, ensuring the first impression visitors have is of a lively, creative, and proud community.
