Weymouth Gears Up for Magical Christmas Light Switch-On and Elf World Record Attempt

Weymouth’s much-loved Christmas Light Switch-On event is set to return with a full day of festive celebrations on Saturday 29th November, running from 9am until late. The event continues to grow in popularity, attracting visitors from across the UK who come to experience the town’s unique holiday spirit.

This year, We Are Weymouth and Weymouth Town Council are thrilled to announce a renewed attempt to break the Elf World Record – a challenge last undertaken in 2021. With growing momentum and community support, hopes are high that Weymouth will finally claim the title and become the official Elf Capital of the UK.

Already known as the fancy dress capital of the UK, Weymouth is no stranger to unusual celebrations. The town is encouraging both residents and visitors to don their best elf attire and take part in what promises to be a joyful and memorable occasion. Expect a day filled with festive cheer, joyful activities, and the exciting opportunity to be part of history.

Whether you’re dressing up as an elf or simply soaking in the atmosphere, this enchanting event promises unforgettable memories for all ages.

Hosted by Weymouth’s businesses, you can expect a day packed with Christmas cheer as well as a full-blown Elf World Record Attempt with Elf-registration and Elf-count.

Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth, comments: Weymouth’s Christmas Light Switch-On is truly magical – a full day of festive fun! People travel from across the UK to be part of the celebration, and this year, we’re more determined than ever to beat our 2021 Elf World Record attempt – something we’ve been dreaming of for years.

We’re calling on locals and visitors alike to help make Weymouth the official Elf Capital of the UK! The record attempt is a wonderfully quirky way to bring everyone together, celebrate the season, and showcase the charm of our town.

It might sound a bit bonkers – but that’s what makes it brilliant! Weymouth is proudly known as the fancy dress capital of the UK, so whether you’re from here or just visiting, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We can’t wait to see the streets filled with elves once again!”

ELF WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT SCHEDULE:

From 9am, visitors can take part in a series of free workshops to become elf-like, making hats, ears, and collars, with face-painting to complete the look.

At 12 noon, elf registration opens at Weymouth Pavilion where participants will receive their wristband before joining the official count and photo opportunity at 1pm.

The fun continues with Dorset’s Largest Elf Parade from 1.15pm to 2pm, filling the town centre with the sound of elves singing, led by a marching band and Santa in his sleigh.

From 2pm to 5pm, the main stage in New Bond Street will host non-stop entertainment, including the panto cast, local choirs and dance groups, The Hooked, street performers, stilt walkers and buskers. Local shops, restaurants and cafes will also be joining in the fun.

At 5pm, the Mayor of Weymouth will join competition winners from Primary Times and the panto cast to switch on the town’s Christmas lights, trees and giant Christmas Elf, followed by live music from CHILL party band. The celebrations continue into the evening with elf-themed parties across pubs, clubs, and venues in town.

But the festive fun doesn’t end there. Throughout December, families can enjoy the Elf Trail, with prizes and discounts to be won, plus the return of the Christmas Sparkle competition as local businesses compete for the best-dressed Christmas window.
